A roller is one clean sheet of fabric on a smooth tube — the simplest mechanism we fit and the easiest to keep clean, which is why it ends up in most kitchens and bathrooms. The fabric does the work, so the choice is really about weave: an open weave keeps the view and softens glare, a dimout takes the room down several stops, and a blackout-coated fabric is as dark as a roller gets inside a recess.
