A short guide to picking the right blind
Most of the decision comes down to three things: how much light you want to lose, how wet or greasy the room gets, and how the window opens.
Light and privacy
A plain roller in a dim fabric dims a room; it does not black it out, because light still travels down the sides of the recess. If you need a bedroom genuinely dark, ask about a blackout fabric fitted outside the recess, or a system with side channels. Day & night banded fabrics are the middle ground — sheer while you want the view, solid once the street lights come on.
The room it lives in
Kitchens and bathrooms are hard on fabric. Steam warps real timber over time, so we tend to steer people towards faux wood, aluminium or a wipe-clean PVC roller above a hob or a bath. Living rooms and bedrooms are where the softer options — romans, honeycombs, real-wood venetians — earn their money.
How the window opens
Tilt-and-turn and uPVC windows usually want a Perfect Fit frame that clips on and travels with the sash. Patio and bi-fold doors suit verticals, because the louvres stack right off the glass. Anything above a stairwell or in a roof is worth motorising — you will not reach it twice a day otherwise.
